Translation universal named lengthening puts that a target text is expected to be longer than its source text. Some scholars, for instance Blum-Kulka, have affirmed this while others have refuted it. Trying to challenge this universal, in this study, the researcher looks for the procedures done by the translator of The Ice Dragon, a children’s fantasy novella by George R. R. Martin, an award-winning author, and their supposed relationship to the length of the resultant translation. In so doing, the researcher implemented a descriptive research using both quantitative and qualitative designs. Accordingly, Chesterman’s S-universal of lengthening was questioned and the translational procedures were accounted for. The results showed that, firstly, in this specific case, the target text is not longer than its source text, and secondly, there are some sorts of procedures at work that may have effects on this, among them are a number of the shifts (procedures) proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. This study found that the most frequent procedure in the translation was “economy.” Pedagogically, this research may help the non-professional translators to understand the effect of their choices on the length of the translation. Besides, one may look for this matter that how a translator is able to reduce, actively, the length of the translation by use of his/her influence and how he/she is able to make a shorter translation which may be easier to read, especially for children. Also, it should be considered that there is another Persian translation for this story done by a different translator, but this research focused on that translated text which its electronic version is free to download and probably is more widespread and readable. Finally, this study is a descriptive one examining only one case; any finding is valid for this specific case and therefore it cannot be generalized.

جهانی ترجمه به نام تطویل، بیان کننده ی این است که انتظار می‌رود متن مقصد از متن مبدا طولانی‌تر باشد. برخی پژوهشگران، به طور مثال بلام کالکا، این موضوع را تایید کرده در حالی که دیگران آنرا تکذیب کرده‌اند. در این پژوهش، در تلاش برای به چالش کشیدن این جهانی، محقق به دنبال رویه هایی است که توسط مترجم اژدهای یخی، رمان کوتاه فانتزی کودکان، نوشته‌ی نویسنده ی برنده‌ی جایزه، جورج آر آر مارتین، انجام شده و همچنین به دنبال رابطه‌ی مفروض آن‌ها با طول ترجمه‌ی حاصل است. به این ترتیب، پژوهشگر با استفاده ازهردو طرح کمی و کیفی، پژوهشی توصیفی انجام داد. بر این اساس، نظریه ی جهانی مبدا تطویل چسترمن مورد پرسش قرار گرفت و رویه های ترجمه بررسی شدند. نتایج نشان داد که اولا، در این مورد ویژه، متن مقصد از متن مبدا خود طولانی تر نیست، و دوما، چندین رویه دخیل اند که شاید بر روی این مسئله تاثیر گذاشته باشند، در میان آن‌ها تعدادی (روند) رویه وجود دارد که توسط وینی و داربلنه مطرح شد. پژوهش حاضر نشان داد که متداول ترین رویه در این ترجمه "ایجاز" بود. از لحاظ آموزشی، پژوهش حاضر می‌تواند به مترجمان غیر حرفه‌ای در فهم تاثیر انتخاب‌هایشان برروی طول ترجمه کمک کند. بعلاوه، ممکن است فردی به دنبال این مسئله باشد که چگونه مترجمی می‌تواند با استفاده از توانایی خود، طول ترجمه را فعالانه کمتر کند و چگونه می‌تواند ترجمه‌ای کوتاه‌تر پدید آورد که خوانش راحت تری، به ویژه برای کودکان داشته باشد. همچنین، شایان توجه است که ترجمه‌ی فارسی دیگری از این داستان توسط مترجم متفاوتی انجام شده است، اما توجه این پژوهش بر روی ترجمه‌ای است که نسخه‌ی الکترونیکی رایگان جهت بارگیری دارد
