| Abstract

This dissertation aims to explore the correlation between Romantic poetry and aesthetic philosophy and basic mystical concepts with particular reference to Sufism. At the root of English Romantic poetry lies a longing for unity, that is, the Romantics are deeply concerned with the mind’s progression from a disintegrated ego into a state of unification where the dualism between human mind and nature is reconciled. English Romantic literature has also often been described in terms of an individual life journey depicting physical and spiritual pilgrimage traversing both inner and outer world to liberate the self and reach a revelatory moment of unification. The Romantic poets attribute the realization of such a coalescence to imagination, that is, for the Romantic poets this reconciliatory state cannot be achieved through rational investigation but via the power of imagination. In this regard, there is striking resemblance between mystical and philosophical thought of Sufism and the idealistic thought of the Romantic poets as they both pursue a sense of unification with the Divine or the Ultimate reality, and they both rely on imagination and intuitive perception to apprehend reality and get a glimpse into the transcendental realm. Applying an analytical-comparative approach with specific reference to Northrop Frye’s anagogic theory, which emphasizes literary commonalities regardless of direct influence or cultural or theological distinctions, and through the analysis of select works of William Wordsworth (1770-1850), Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) and Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), this dissertation endeavors to depict that certain Romantic poets’ longing for the reconciliation of subject and object via imagination and its sublime product, poetic language, resembles the mystic’s yearning for transcendental states of consciousness and unification with the divinely infinite. This study also analyzes Romantic definition of imagination in the light of Ibn al-‘Arabi’s concept of imagination. Furthermore, through analysis of the concept of Fana in Islamic mysticism and Sufi literature, particularly Rumi’s Mathnavi, this dissertation reveals that the Romantics’ yearning for a state of reconciliation and their yearning for infinity, which is prevalent in the major works of the Romantic poets, correspond to the mystic’s pursuit of unity or the Sufi’s concept of self-annihilation or Fana.Key Terms: Romanticism, Imagination, Sufism, Unity of Being, Mystical Experience, Circuitous Journey, Self-annihilation (Fana).

هدف این رساله بررسی ارتباط میان شعر و فلسفۀ زیبایی شناسی مکتب رمانتیسم و مفاهیم بنیادی عرفانی به ویژه صوفیگری است. در بطن شعر رمانتیک انگلیسی اشتیاقی برای دستیابی به وحدت وجود دارد، بدين معني كه رمانتيك‌ها عميقاً دغدغة پیشروی ذهن از يك ضمير ازهم گسیخته به حالتي از وحدت را دارند كه در آن دوگانگي بين ذهن انسان و طبيعت از بين مي‌رود و این دو به یگانگی می‌رسند. ادبيات رمانتيك انگلستان همچنان اغلب سفر زيارتيِ جسمي و معنوي را به تصوير‌مي‌كشد كه در هر دو عالم درون و برون اتفاق مي‌افتد تا نفس را آزاد سازد و به لحظة مكاشفه‌آميز يگانگي برسد. شعراي رمانتيك، تحقق چنين آميختگي را به قوة خیال مربوط مي‌دانند، بدین معنی که برای شعرای رمانتیک این حالت از آشتی نه از طریق جستجوی عقلانی بلکه از طریق قدرت خیال قابل دستیابی است. در اين رابطه، شباهت قابل تأملی بين تفكر عرفاني و فلسفی صوفي‌گري و تفكر ايده‌آليستي شعراي رمانتيك وجود دارد، چرا كه هر دو مكتب به دنبال يكي‌شدن عرفاني با الوهيت‌اند و هر دو بر قوة خیال و دانش شهودی براي درک واقعیت و ورود به قلمروي متعالي تكيه دارند. رساله حاضر با بهره از روش تحلیلی-تطبیقی و بر اساس نظریۀ آناگوژیکی یا نقد عام نورتروپ فرای که بر اشتراکات ادیان و ادبیات جهان فارغ از تأثیر و تأثر مستقیم یا چارچوب‌های فرهنگی و مذهبی تاکید دارد، و از طریق بررسی آثار منتخب ویلیام وردزورث (1170-1850)، ساموئل تیلور کولریج (1772-1834) و پرسی بیش شلی (1792-1882)، در‌پي تبیین اين موضوع است كه تمایل برخي از شعراي رمانتيك به آميختن شناسا و موضوع شناسایی از طريق خیال و محصول متعالي آن كه همان زبان شاعرانه است، مشابه تمنای عارف براي رسيدن به حالات متعالي آگاهي و وحدت با بی‌نهایت قدسی است. این پژوهش همچنین تعریف رمانتیک‌ها از خیال را در پرتو مفهوم خیال نزد محی‌الدین ابن عربی ملقب به شیخ اکبر مورد بررسی قرار می‌هد. همچنین با بررسی مفهوم فنا در عرفان اسلامی و ادبیات صوفیه به ویژه مثنوی مولوی، نتایج این پژوهش نشان می‌دهد كه اشتیاق رمانتيك‌ها براي رسيدن به حالتي از آشتي و وحدت، كه در بسياري از آثار شعرای رمانتيك انگلیسی به وفور يافت مي‌شود، همانند تمنای عارف برای دستیابی به وحدت يا مفهوم صوفيانۀ انحلال نفس يا «فنا» می‌باشد.کلید واژه‌ها: رمانتیسم، خیال، صوفیگری، وحدت وجود، انحلال نفس (فنا)، تجربۀ عرفانی.
